Edo Murtić Collection

Painter and graphic artist Edo Murtić is a prominent representative of abstract painting and one of the most creative authors of contemporary Croatian art.

At first, he painted in the spirit of coloristic intimism and realism, then post-impressionistic colourism. During his stay in the USA and Canada (1951–1952), where he encountered abstract expressionism, he created the cycle of paintings The Experience of America, dynamically composed urban motifs with strong colours. For a short time, he was close to Art Informel.

From the mid-1960s, he achieved a great coloristic synthesis, with strong expressiveness. From the mid-1980s, he renewed figurative expression. At the turn of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, he returned to abstraction. He illustrated literary works with graphics and drawings, created large wall decorations and mosaics, tapestries, enamels, ceramics, posters, and stage design.

Oil on canvas

A monumental painting that, with its expressive power, captures the attention of the entire entrance impression into the bank branch. An exceptional work by Edo Murtić, who adapted to the space and purposefully created the painting for the space it belongs to, remaining true to his stylistic expression. Four large black surfaces that evoke huge brush strokes are arranged in a series of interrupted diagonal directions, occupying the central part of the painting.

Tapestry

Based on a model by Edo Murtić, a tapestry of multi-coloured woollen threads was created in Regeneracija Zabok, which very faithfully conveys the abstract expression of this artist into the medium of tapestry. The expressionistic gesture of energetic strokes - the surface - builds a composition of strong dynamics and tension. Black and white prevail, with elements of blue, green and a few accents of red and yellow. By combining several types of woollen weaving, a certain relief is achieved, which enhances the visual impression of the already generally monumental work.
